Now, let's discuss what causes adrenal fatigue. It's a term that often circulates, and while some people claim to have adrenal fatigue, many don't fully understand what it entails beyond the symptoms.


Adrenal fatigue refers to a collection of symptoms believed to be caused by long-term exposure to stress or other factors that disrupt the proper functioning of the adrenal glands. Stress can manifest in various forms, including physical, mental, or emotional stress. Our bodies are designed to handle stress in short bursts, but prolonged stress can take a toll on our adrenal glands.


Some non-traditional doctors may refer to this condition as adrenal dysfunction, as there are a few different diseases associated with the adrenals. However, the term adrenal fatigue primarily focuses on the symptoms experienced. Sandy will now go over the key symptoms associated with adrenal fatigue.


The main symptoms of adrenal fatigue include fatigue, difficulty sleeping, feeling run down, lack of mental clarity (brain fog), low libido, poor immune function, and inflammation. These symptoms can make it challenging to carry out daily activities and affect overall well-being.


Now, let's explore the five main causes of adrenal fatigue and some potential solutions.


  1. Lack of sleep: Your body requires sufficient sleep to heal and rejuvenate, including your adrenal glands. On average, an individual needs around seven hours of good-quality sleep to cope with stress effectively.
  2. Excessive caffeine consumption: Chronic caffeine intake, such as drinking multiple cups of coffee a day, can deplete essential vitamins like B1, calcium, and potassium. These vitamins play a crucial role in supporting adrenal health. Limiting caffeine intake to one cup a day is recommended.
  3. Inadequate exercise: Regular exercise helps release stress from your body and contributes to overall well-being. Not exercising can lead to increased stress on the adrenals. Finding a balance and incorporating moderate exercise, such as long walks, can provide benefits without overwhelming the body.
  4. Chronic stress or trauma: Constant exposure to stress without relief can exhaust the adrenals. It is crucial to find ways to manage stress effectively and seek support during traumatic events to prevent long-term damage to the adrenals.
  5. Nutrient deficiencies: Lacking essential nutrients, such as vitamin C, can contribute to adrenal fatigue. Vitamin C is necessary for the production of adrenal hormones. Consuming foods rich in vitamin C, such as leafy greens, can help support adrenal health.
